A DAC, a headphone amplifier, and an audio interface sound similar, but they solve different problems. Many people do not need any of them, and some need one for a specific reason. This guide explains what each device does and how to tell whether it will help you.
What a DAC Does
A digital-to-analog converter turns the digital audio in your files and streams into the analog signal that headphones and speakers use. Every phone, laptop, and music player already has one built in. An external USB DAC replaces that built-in converter and often adds a cleaner output stage and more power.
When an External DAC Helps
A separate DAC helps most when your device has a weak or noisy headphone output, such as an older laptop with hiss, or when you want to connect to a stereo amplifier through a better output. Many phones no longer have a headphone jack, so a small USB-C or Lightning dongle DAC lets you use wired headphones. The improvement in sound is often smaller than people expect, and good modern devices already have solid converters. See how to improve headphone sound for free fixes to try first.

It supports a maximum sampling rate of 32bit/384Khz, which is higher than most other USB C headphone adapters available on the market.
Headphone Amplifiers
A headphone amplifier provides more power. It matters for headphones with high impedance or low sensitivity, which can sound quiet or thin from a phone. Most everyday headphones do not need one. Many DACs include a headphone amplifier, which is why the two are often sold together. Our guide on audio specs explained shows how to read impedance and sensitivity.

* 🎛️【High-Fidelity Amplification - 0.0003% THD+N】*---: Our eSynic Portable low distortion audio headphone amp Engineered with a dual-voltage (±4V) circuit delivering pristine audio reproduction across 16-600Ω impedance ranges. Achieves >100dB SNR and ultra-low distortion for uncolored monitoring accuracy.
Headphone Amplifier Support 16-600Ω impedance headphone help headphones with high impedance or low sensitivity to be better driven. Maximum power output:100mW@32Ω loaded/ 60mW@600Ω loaded
Adopting innovative circuit design, DC 5-20V wide input working voltage, the amplifier circuit can always work at a high voltage of 26V, and the background noise index is excellent. With wide frequency response extension, excellent transient response, excellent purity and transparency, and good dynamic range.
Audio Interfaces
An audio interface is a box that connects microphones and instruments to a computer and sends audio back out. It includes microphone preamps, XLR and instrument inputs, phantom power for condenser microphones, and a DAC and headphone output. You need one to record with a studio microphone or instrument, and it also gives low delay when monitoring yourself. It is overkill if you only listen to music.

Pro performance with great pre-amps - Achieve a brighter recording thanks to the high performing mic pre-amps of the Scarlett 3rd Gen. A switchable Air mode will add extra clarity to your acoustic instruments when recording with your Solo 3rd Gen
The new generation of the songwriter's interface: Plug in your mic and guitar and let Scarlett Solo 4th Gen bring big studio sound to wherever you make music
Podcast, Record, Live Stream, This Portable Audio Interface Covers it All - USB sound card for Mac or PC delivers 48kHz audio resolution for pristine recording every time
Which One You Need
If you only listen and your headphones sound fine, you probably need none of them. If you want to use wired headphones on a phone without a jack, get a small dongle DAC. If your headphones are hard to drive, consider a DAC with a headphone amplifier. If you record vocals or instruments, buy an audio interface. USB microphones skip the interface, but give less flexibility, and our guide to audio mixers covers the mixer alternative.

Hi-Res and DACs
Support for high sample rates is a common selling point, but whether you can hear it depends on your music and equipment. Read what hi-res audio is before paying extra. Good DACs of any price are typically very accurate, and noise and distortion are lower than the limits of most headphones.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a DAC Improve Sound Quality?
Sometimes. It helps most when your device has a poor built-in output or too little power. If your current setup already sounds clean and loud enough, the difference may be small.
Do I Need a DAC for Wired Headphones on My Phone?
If your phone has no headphone jack, you need an adapter, which includes a small DAC. A basic adapter is enough for most headphones, and a better dongle may improve volume and clarity.
What Is the Difference Between a DAC and an Audio Interface?
A DAC converts digital audio to analog for listening. An audio interface does that and also records, with microphone inputs and preamps. If you only listen, you need a DAC at most.
Do I Need an Audio Interface for a USB Microphone?
No. A USB microphone has its own converter and connects directly to the computer. An interface is needed for XLR microphones and instruments.
Do I Need a Headphone Amp With a DAC?
Only if your headphones need more power. Many DACs include a headphone amplifier already, so check the output specifications against your headphones.
